The Guidelines to being a good Volunteer Greeter
This guide is not created, endorsed or approved by There™/Makena Technologies or the Volunteer Greeter Program

1.
Always keep in mind that even though you don't work for There / Makena Technologies, you do in fact represent them. If you act like a moron or give out false info, it reflects bad on There / Makena Technologies.
2.
NEVER argue in *public* with a Staffmember, a fellow Greeter, or even a New Member. The point of the Gold Star is to make us more *visible* and that also makes us a target for people trying to do damage to the Greeters. They will use ANY opportunity to trip you up. (sad, but unfortunately true). If you disagree about something, rather use an IM.
3.
Even though There is now 18+, the overall guidelines are still PG13 (think 'Disney'). If you opted to have the Star symbol in your nametag, you should be PG13 too, at least at the New Member Islands (see guideline 1).
4.
When on duty, always approach a new member in a friendly manner, without making it look like you are jumping them. They are like 'Alice in Wonderland' on their first visit and still confused mostly.
5.
If a new member indicates they don't have any questions and/or don't need your help, don't push yourself on them. We are there IF they need help, not to force help down their throat. (Don't laugh, I've seen this happen). Just indicate they are free to come find you if they need help and let them be on their way.
6.
Know WHERE to find answers if you don't have them readily available. Sometimes a new member asks a question you don't have the answer to off-hand. Don't make something up, but know where to look (or who to ask) for the answer. Nobody expects you to know everything off the top of your head.
7.
Be available to new members. When on duty, being red-handed is not helpful. When not on duty, although you are not required to actively walk up to new members to help, don't tell them to 'buzz off' if they approach you. (See again, guideline 1)
8.
If you are being treated rude or if new members swear at you, do not try to 'get even' or swear back. Simply take a screenshot, or get the chatlog and report it. We are not the 'police' in There. At most we are 'Community Liaison Officers' (look it up). Sometimes people will try and 'lure' you into breaking the TOS, by getting you to swear in public. To them, nothing is 'cooler' than having a volunteer greeter moderated. Be advised, however, that this *will* get you kicked out of the group, so guess who won?
9.
Try and have as much info readily available as is feasable (keeping in mind guideline 6). Check There™ Central daily.
10.
When "on duty" (ie on a New Member Island (Zona, Fisher, Paiz or the Welcome Walkway), try to be available as much as possible. Even though you are a volunteer, the Gold Star is still visible and it is unhelpful if you stand there for hours with your green goggles on.
11.
Be aware of the Terms of Service.
12.
You should at least have a basic working knowledge of the There Client.
13.
Be aware of how to handle Griefers (ignore etc.), so you can advise New Members.
